On Saturday Oct 24, Labor of Love Charities, Shawnee Rescue Mission and their many volunteers put on the second community-wide outreach event. An estimated 4,000 people gathered in Woodland Veterans Park in downtown Shawnee to partake of the food, clothes, blankets and other household items donated for their benefit. About 3,500 Frito chili pies and 620 cups of Starbuck’s coffee were served. There were 580 families registered into the charity database for future services and client follow-up.
Feed the Children donated two truckloads of a wide variety of groceries. Clients registered in timed increments to keep the lines steady and orderly. Racks and stacks of clothes lined the area just outside the swimming pool house. Incredible Inflatables donated two of their attractions for children. Shawnee Starbuck’s served hot coffee next to the bandstand where several groups entertained the crowd all afternoon.
The Labor of Love Charities is working to acquire a permanent building for its operational offices, overnight shelter and other client services.
