Urgent: Claim Your Property Tax Savings Before March 15!

If you bought a home recently, you might be missing out on a property tax break—but there’s still time to fix that! The deadline to file for homestead exemption in Oklahoma is actually Friday, March 14, and it’s one of the easiest ways to lower your property taxes every year. The deadline is usually March 15, but that falls on a Saturday this year, and I confirmed with the Pottawatomie Assessor’s Office the March 14 deadline.

Many homeowners assume they’re already getting this exemption, but unless you filed for it yourself, you could be riding on the previous owner’s exemption—or not receiving it at all. Here’s what you need to know to avoid overpaying on property taxes.

What Is Homestead Exemption?

Homestead exemption is a property tax reduction for homeowners who use their property as their primary residence. It lowers the taxable assessed value of your home by $1,000, which means you pay less in property taxes. In many cases, this translates to an annual savings of around $100 to $150, depending on your local millage rate. Over time, these savings add up!

Do You Need to File?

Check your county assessor’s website to see if you already have homestead exemption. You need to apply if:

You haven’t filed since purchasing your home.
You moved in the past year—exemptions don’t automatically transfer.
You’re unsure if it’s in your name—if the previous owner’s exemption is still in place, you could lose it without warning.
