Tinker AFB Just Invested Half a Billion Dollars in Its Future.
And Shawnee Is on the Right Side of It.
There’s a reason people who know this area keep landing on Shawnee. And this week, the federal government just handed us one more reason to shout it from the rooftops. There’s a reason people who know this area keep landing on Shawnee. And this week, the federal government just handed us one more reason to shout it from the rooftops.
Half a Billion Dollars Is Coming to Tinker AFB
Tinker Air Force Base has broken ground on the Bomber Agile Common Hangar, or BACH. It’s a nearly 197,000-square-foot depot maintenance facility being built to support the B-52 Stratofortress and the next-generation B-21 Raider bomber. The total investment is estimated between $250 and $500 million, with $127 million funded in Fiscal Year 2026 and another $141 million already planned for FY2027.
That kind of federal commitment doesn’t happen at a base that’s winding down. It happens at a base that’s gearing up for the next several decades of national defense. Tinker isn’t going anywhere. It’s growing.
What That Growth Means for the People Who Work There
Tinker is already Oklahoma’s largest single-site employer. A project this size brings more civilian jobs, more contractors, more engineers and technicians and skilled tradespeople. These are the kind of jobs people build lives around. Good wages, long-term stability, and a reason to put down roots somewhere close to the base.
Here’s the thing about “close to the base”: the answer people keep finding is Shawnee.
Shawnee Is on the Right Side of This
Pull up a map and look east of OKC. That’s Shawnee, right there on the right side of the metro, with a straight shot to Tinker on I-40. About 22 minutes, door to gate. For Tinker workers and defense contractors, Shawnee has always made sense. You get a real community, real value, and none of the congestion and price pressure that comes with living in the middle of the metro.
Tinker draws from a regional labor pool of more than 1.4 million people. As the base expands, more of those workers are going to be looking for exactly what Shawnee offers. Not a compromise. A choice. The right side of the metro means you’re close enough to everything that matters and far enough from the noise that you can actually breathe.
If You’re Buying or Selling, Pay Attention
For buyers, a federal investment of this scale is a long-term economic signal. When the government commits half a billion dollars to a base, the jobs, the workforce, and the housing demand that follows are not going anywhere. Getting into Shawnee now means getting in ahead of that demand.
For sellers, the story just got stronger. You’re in a community that sits right next to one of the most strategically important military installations in the country, in a metro that just secured a generational federal investment.
Shawnee has always been the right answer for people who want value, community, and proximity to OKC without paying OKC prices. The median home value here runs around $197,000, compared to nearly $280,000 in the broader OKC metro. That gap is real money, and it’s part of why Shawnee keeps coming up when people start doing the math. The Tinker expansion just makes that answer easier to say out loud.
