More Than a Dot on the Map

Most people outside Central Oklahoma have never given Shawnee a serious look. People who live here think that’s a little crazy. Shawnee is affordable, genuinely friendly, and sits right on the edge of everything the OKC metro has to offer. Without the traffic, the noise, or the price tag. This is your starting point for getting to know it.

Real Affordability

Median home prices well below the OKC metro average. Your dollar goes further here without sacrificing quality of life.

35 Minutes to OKC

Close enough to commute. Far enough to breathe. Shawnee sits right on the eastern edge of the metro with easy access to Tinker AFB, downtown OKC, and everything in between.

Small Town, Real Community

People still say hi in the grocery store. Neighbors show up. Local businesses know your name. That’s not a marketing line, it’s just how Shawnee works.

Room to Grow

Shawnee has land, affordability, and momentum. New home communities are developing. The Downtown Depot District is growing. The city is moving.

Questions People Ask Before They Move Here

Is Shawnee really close enough to OKC for a daily commute?

Yes! Shawnee sits about 35 miles east of downtown Oklahoma City, which puts most of the metro within 35-45 minutes, depending on where you’re headed. Tinker AFB is one of the most common commute destinations and takes about 25-30 minutes on a normal day. Bonus: if your workday is during daylight hours, the sun will never be in your eyes!

What’s the school situation?

Shawnee Public Schools serves most of the city and has a long history in the community. There are also private options, Grove, North Rock Creek, South Rock Creek, and Bethel Public Schools serve the western parts of the area. We’re proud to have Gordon Cooper Technology Center, which offers a Pre-Engineering Academy and the highly acclaimed Aviation Maintenance Technology program. We have a full breakdown on the schools page including calendars and supply lists.

Is there actually anything to do in Shawnee?

More than people expect. The Depot District — what I call Shawnee’s downtown revival zone — has independent restaurants, art, coffee shops, shopping, and community events. There are parks, trails, nearby lakes, casinos, and a growing arts presence anchored by the Painted Horses public art project. It’s not Bricktown, but it’s real, and it’s growing.

What kinds of people are moving to Shawnee right now?

A mix. OKC suburbanites looking for more house for their money, Tinker and military families, people relocating from out of state who want affordability without isolation, and a growing number of people in their 50s and 60s who are rightsizing and want a slower pace without sacrificing convenience.

How’s the local economy?

Shawnee functions as a regional hub for Central Oklahoma: healthcare, education, retail, and agriculture all have a strong presence. It has its own micropolitan statistical area. Major employers include Citizen Potawatomi Nation, the medical community, and Shawnee Public Schools. We have a full economic overview if you want to dig into the numbers.

What about new construction? Can I build here?

Yes! There are several active new home communities around Shawnee with lots available at prices that would be impossible to find closer to OKC. We track those and can point you in the right direction.
