What Shawnee Is Today

Shawnee sits on the right side of the Oklahoma City metro and has its own micropolitan statistical area. We are big enough to offer choices and small enough that people still say hi in the grocery store. With a blend of agricultural heritage and growing urban convenience, Shawnee is what some people call an ag-urban community.

Many residents commute to OKC and Tinker AFB, which is why Shawnee is often described as a bedroom community and a developing edge city. Thanks to affordability and available land, Shawnee is sometimes called the last frontier for OKC growth.

Shawnee as a Regional Center

Shawnee serves as a regional hub for several major sectors across Central Oklahoma.

Education

Shawnee attracts students of all ages. Shawnee Public Schools serve the city, and families can also access nearby districts and private schools. Higher education includes Oklahoma Baptist University and Gordon Cooper Technology Center, which draws students regionally and is known for its Aviation Maintenance Technology program.

Healthcare

Shawnee supports the region with hospitals, clinics, specialty practices, and urgent care centers. Major medical systems in OKC are an easy drive west when needed.

Employment and Workforce

Our workforce is balanced between local employers and commuters heading west toward Tinker AFB and the OKC metro.
Local industries include education, healthcare, retail, government, hospitality, and manufacturing.

Government

As the county seat of Pottawatomie County, Shawnee houses key public offices and agencies. Local government works to manage growth, infrastructure and development across the region.

Retail

The Kickapoo dining and shopping corridor draws shoppers from a wide radius with national retailers and local favorites.
Historic areas like the developing Depot District offer local restaurants, coffee shops, antiques, markets, and entertainment.

Manufacturing

Shawnee has a stable manufacturing base with companies supporting statewide supply chains. Easy access to I-40 and Highway 177 strengthens our logistics and distribution footprint.

Housing

Shawnee offers a wide range of housing options from established neighborhoods to rural properties and new communities.
This variety is one reason so many rightsizers and midlife movers choose Shawnee.

Entertainment

Shawnee has more to do than many expect. Our community offers community theatre, local music, breweries, casinos, bowling, festivals, parks, and year-round events.
