Fair Housing in 2025: Why Equal Access Still Matters in Real Estate

Since President Donald Trump took office on January 20, we’ve seen major shifts in federal policy, particularly around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Some of these changes have sparked debate, while others have left people wondering what it means for real estate—especially when federal fair housing laws and the REALTOR® Code of Ethics remain firmly in place.

So let’s talk about it! Let’s talk about what’s changing at the federal level, what’s staying the same, and most importantly, what it means for you—whether you’re buying, selling, or simply wondering if the doors to homeownership are truly open to everyone.

The Federal Shift Away from DEI

One of the first major moves from the new administration was an executive order eliminating DEI programs across federal agencies. Offices dedicated to diversity and inclusion have been shut down, contracts canceled, and policies that once prioritized DEI initiatives erased. According to the new administration, the goal is to return to a strictly merit-based system in government hiring and policies. Now, it may just be me, but I don’t think that DEI replaced a merit-based system; it just ensured everyone was considered for a job or a promotion. If we’re being honest, we know that wasn’t always the case.

And let’s be real—these days, DEI has become a political lightning rod, often thrown into debates about whether things are getting “too woke.” But here’s the thing: in real estate, this isn’t about politics. It’s about ensuring that everyone has a fair and equal opportunity to buy or sell a home, without discrimination or unnecessary barriers. That’s not political—it’s just the right thing to do. Call me “woke.”

Fair Housing: The Law That Still Stands Strong

Despite changes in DEI policies at the federal level, the Fair Housing Act remains one of the most critical protections in real estate. This law prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, or national origin. No president, no policy shift, and no political trend changes that.

And in my world, it goes even further.

REALTORS® Are Held to a Higher Standard

As a REALTOR®—and as Steve, the human—I don’t just follow the law, I follow a Code of Ethics that expands these protections. The REALTOR® Code of Ethics, upheld by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), takes fair housing seriously, which is why it also prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. That means when you work with me, you’re getting more than just someone who knows the market. You’re getting someone who believes, down to their core, that housing is for everyone.

What This Means for You in Shawnee and Central Oklahoma

Diverse group of older adults standing around in a selfieI don’t care what color your skin is, what you sound like, where you came from, who you love, or where you worship. If you’re buying or selling a home, you deserve the same level of service, respect, and advocacy as anyone else. Period.

I know that for some, stepping into the home-buying or selling process comes with a little trepidation. Maybe you’ve felt unwelcome somewhere before. Maybe you’ve wondered if you’ll be treated differently because we don’t look alike, sound alike, or share the same background. If that thought has ever crossed your mind, I want to tell you something straight from the heart:

Not on my watch.

Your home is more than a transaction. It’s part of your story. And I take it personally that you feel safe, heard, and respected throughout the process.

The Road Ahead

While federal DEI programs may be shifting, our mission in real estate remains clear: to provide equal opportunity for all. That means continuing to educate, advocate, and push for a housing market where fairness isn’t just an idea—it’s a reality.

I’ll keep fighting for that. Not just because it’s my job, but because it’s the right thing to do.
